It has been alleged tonight by the ABC's 7.30 Report that a customer of MLC Life Insurance has been unfairly denied a claim for critical illness. We provide the following statement:

• We have different types of life insurance cover for different situations and critical illness cover is deliberately designed to cover a very specific number of conditions only.
• We are not aware of any other major Australian life insurer offering critical illness cover for intensive care with intubation for periods of less than 10 days.
• MLC Life Insurance is working with the rest of the industry over standard definitions for life insurance, however, it is important to note that any substantial changes to these definitions could potentially result in premium increases for all customers.
